PAIGE BUECKERS, UCONN Guardian and recently crowned NCAA champion, were selected in total No. 1 The Dallas Wings in the design of WNBA 2025, setting the tone for the franchise ready for reconstruction.
The long -awaited selection made an official Monday evening, April 14 in The Shed in New York, came only a week after Bueckers led Huskies to their 12. With the wings undergoing a complex revision in the list and leadership, Bueckers becomes the face of franchises with fresh ambitions.
CEO Curt Miller, hired this past offseason, did not conceal the team’s intention.
“It was just Paige and Paige very soon,” Miller said. “He’s such a special player – an efficient, unobtrusive and proven winner. That’s the kind of player who moves the direction of franchise.”
Bueckers, 23, come to Dallas with a star university: triple All-American, Naismmith National Player of the Year (like a newcomer) and Uconn’s leader of all time in career scoring diameter (19.8 ppg). Paige Bueckers fought injuries during her colleague career. Yet she limited her time in Storrs with a dominant NCAA tournament. Bueckers average 24.8 points and shot 48% from the arch.
WNBA DRAFT 2025 MARKS MILESTONE FOR UCONN STAR
The design of the WNBA 2025 was historical in several respects. Bueckers became the sixth player of Uconn, who was selected No. 1 overall, and joined the elite group that includes Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore and Breann Stewart. She is also the first player to win the national title and was first developed in the same year since Stewart in 2016.
“It is not just a choice of proposal, it’s a building block,” said Chris Koclanes, head coach. “Paige brings a lead, an elite shot, and an understanding of the game you don’t teach. Pulling it with an arike (ogunbowale) gives us one of the most dynamic backcourts in the league.”
Strategic reconstruction: Wings Eye Future with key acquisitions
Dallas Wings, who finished 9-31 last season and missed the playoffs, aggressively transformed their list. The addition of Bueckers is governed by the acquisition of key veterans Dijonai Carrington, Naloss Smith, Tyasha Harris and Myisha Hines-Alllen. The team also added NC Standout Aziha James with selection No. 12 and packed the productive night 2025 WNBA.
Dallas is also on the verge of the main organizational upgrade, with plans to move from Arlington to the larger arena in the center of Dallas in 2026, accompanied by separate exercise.
“It’s not a conversion – it’s a building,” Bueckers said. “The vision they shared with me is exciting and I am ready to give everything to this team and this city.”
