The nomination and recommendation process for the Padma Awards, which will be announced on Republic Day 2027 to recognize individuals for exceptional achievements and services, began on Sunday.
Padma Awards — Padma Vibhushan (awarded for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (awarded for distinguished service of a high order) and Padma Shri (awarded for distinguished service in any field) are among the highest civilian honors in the country. Established in 1954, these awards are announced every year on Republic Day to recognize “significant work” in various fields, a government statement said, according to PTI.

The government said the awards are given in recognition of distinguished and exceptional achievements as well as service in a wide range of fields and disciplines, including arts, literature and education, sports, medicine, social work, science and technology, public affairs, civil service and commerce and industry.
The statement also said the government remains “committed” to transforming the Padma awards into a “people’s Padma”.
“All persons irrespective of race, occupation, status or gender are eligible for these awards. Government employees including those working with PSUs, except doctors and scientists, are not eligible for the Padma award,” he said.
The statement said all citizens were invited to submit nominations or recommendations, including their own nominations. He also urged people to make special efforts to identify deserving individuals, especially women, members of weaker sections, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, divyang persons and those engaged in selfless service to the society, whose excellence and contribution deserve recognition.
She further noted that nominations and recommendations must contain all necessary details as per the prescribed format available on the portal, clearly highlighting the distinguished achievements and exceptional services of the nominee in their respective field or discipline.

The statement further added that the statutes and guidelines governing these awards are also available on the official website.
For 2026, the President has approved the awarding of 131 Padma awards, which include two duo cases that count as a single award in each case. Honors included five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri awards.
