The Public Accounts Committee called on Parliament to review the functioning of the unique identification body of India (Uidai) and identified several concerns, including the high level of Aadhaar biometric verification failure, which can lead to many recipients from social care programs.
At his meeting on Thursday (July 17, 2025), the Committee, headed by the Congress Head of KC Venugopal Briefing, received the Controller team and the General Auditor (CAG), who submitted a report on Uida 2021. “This is a problem for an ordinary person. We have pushed various problems and raised several questions,” Mr. Venugopal told reporters at the end of the meeting.
Change of biometry
As part of the party lines, deputies in the Committee pointed out that biometric verification failure is a serious problem, because most of the government’s social security systems are directly bound to Aadhaar. This has led to many eligible recipients from receiving ration or jobs within programs, such as a public distribution system or the National Employment System Mahatma Gandhi, because their biometric data no longer corresponds to the UIDAI record.
According to sources, Uidai officials explained that in many cases people who do hard work, their fingerprints do not read the machines properly. In the case of older people, there are often failures in the corresponding Iris samples. However, officials also insisted that Uidai is constantly upgrading their systems to address these challenges.
Data leaks and duplicates
Sources said several deputies also quoted different messages to emphasize the risk of data leaks. Uidai officials claimed that their central repository was uninhabited and their investigation showed that any leak was expelled from the registration centers. They added that Uidai had strengthened the monitoring mechanism to connect all the holes.
Some estimates indicate that more AADHAAR cards are currently used than the overall population of the country, indicating possible duplications and delay in deactivating the deceased cards. Uidai officials stated that in the case of the deceased it depends on voluntary deactivation. PAC ordered Uidai to actively act to clean the AADHAAR card list.
