All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen President Asaduddin Owaisi urged the people of Adilabad to end communalism and asked them to exercise their right to vote decisively and for his party in the upcoming civic polls.
Mr Owaisi was addressing a public meeting in Adilabad where AIMIM had fielded 19 candidates. Mr. Owaisi said silence in a democracy was tantamount to accepting politics fueled by intimidation and “bulldozer” symbolism.
He appealed to voters to exercise their right, saying the use of the ballot was necessary to resist what he described as a coercive government.
Mr. Owaisi promised to raise demands in Parliament for Adilabad’s infrastructure, including the construction of a railway underpass and a bridge. He said that if the Bharatiya Janata Party were to act on these demands before him, it would only be because it was afraid of public pressure.
Touching on the issue of livelihood, Mr. Owaisi addressed the members of the Qureshi community and assured them that if AIMIM corporators are elected, abattoirs will be constructed at a site closer to Adilabad. Referring to the community’s traditional occupation, he said the Qureshis had been involved in meat trade for two centuries. He added that this is protected by Article 19 of the Constitution as a fundamental right to livelihood.
Over the past 11 years, he argued, the country has embraced suspicion instead of trust, lies instead of truth, and fear instead of hope. “The poor got nothing but poverty and misery,” he said.
He also took issue with recent remarks attributed to the national security adviser about “revenge for history” and questioned who such revenge would be aimed at. Mr. Owaisi went on to hit out at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of spreading hatred by targeting minorities, especially Bengali-speaking Muslims.
Referring to the constitutional provisions, Mr. Owaisi said that Articles 256 and 355 empower the Union Government to ensure that the States function in accordance with the Constitution. He appealed to voters to reject attempts to create tension between communities. “You are adil (just, honest) in Adilabad. End communalism,” he said.
