
While the nearly 600 cattle head, which was illegally transported, was confiscated by the Uttara Kannada police until last week from 2023, a crowded government and another 10 Goshalas refuses to receive cattle rescued by the police, according to the district superintendent of M. Narayan.
“The police took care of cattle at the premises of police stations as long as their owners or cattle lovers take away,” Hindu said.
Mohan Kumar, Deputy Director – Uttara Kannada, Animal Breeding Department, said the Goshala district and 10 other private goshalas in the district were already overcrowded with a cattle.
The Goshala district in Haliyal Taluk can accommodate 100 cattle and now is 140 cattle. 10 privately controlled goshalas also has cattle much outside its load capacity. All these goshaly are unable to take additional cattle. The privately operated Goshalas did not ask for a government subsidy of 1 lakh to prevent governmental sending of cattle rescued by the police to their units, he said.
Goshala operators spend a lot in Uttara Kannada on obtaining feed from other parts of the state, as in the districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, Mr. Kumar said. “The sum of 150 GBP is spent to at least 10 kg of feed needed daily. Investments in the feed are the main part of the operator’s expenditure, except for wages for workers and other foundation costs,” he added.
According to Mr. Narayana in 2023, the police Uttara Kannada confiscated 160 cattle in connection with 26 cases of illegal transport of cattle. The police confiscated 3,693 kg of beef by registering 14 cases of illegal beef transport in the same year. A total of 97 people were arrested for illegal transport of cattle and beef. In 2024, the police confiscated 340 cattle in 40 cases, while five camels were seized in connection with one illegal transport of camels. In connection with two cases of illegal beef transport, up to 169 kg of beef was confiscated. In these cases, a total of 126 people were arrested.
This year, until 18 April, the police confiscated 72 cattle by registering 10 cases of illegal transport. Police confiscated in connection with three cases of 212 kg of beef. He said that a total of 39 people were arrested.
