A significant number of child beneficiaries under the sponsorship scheme who are entitled to a monthly allowance have not been paid in Karnataka for the last one year. As many as 26,767 orphaned, vulnerable or single parent children have been registered under this program with the Women and Child Development Department.
Under the scheme, which was jointly implemented by the state and the center (with a 60:40 share), eligible children were to receive ₹4,000 every month for three years or up to the age of 18, whichever was earlier. The amount would be directly deposited into the children’s bank accounts. However, a dual challenge hindered the regime’s implementation. About 8,439 children have not received payments because the center did not recognize them as beneficiaries, while the remaining 18,328 beneficiaries are unpaid due to a technical glitch.
