Dewald Brevis was dismissed in a controversial moment during the first T20I between India and South Africa on Tuesday, December 9 at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. On the second ball of the 10th over in the Proteas’ run-chase, Jasprit Bumrah claimed his 100th T20I wicket by removing Brevis, who scored 22 off 14 balls with three fours and a six.
Bumrah sent a sharp backward ball onto the stumps and Brevis, who was late in the pull, ended up skidding the ball. Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav completed a simple catch at extra cover. The referee on the field then checked whether the delivery was in accordance with the law. While Brevis had already started to depart, the records suggested that Bumrah might have overstepped a bit. However, the third official deemed the ball legal and the goal stood.
India vs South Africa 1st T20I Highlights
With this milestone, Bumrah became only the fifth bowler to take 100 wickets across all three international formats, joining Shakib Al Hasan, Tim Southee, Lasith Malinga and Shaheen Shah Afridi.
INDIA CRUSH SOUTH AFRICA
India gave a dominant performance beat South Africa by 101 runs to take a 1-0 lead in a five-match T20I series. After being sent in to bat, the hosts posted a competitive 175 for 6 on a surface that wasn’t the easiest to create strikes. Hardik Pandya played a game-changing knock as he smashed an unbeaten 59 off just 28 balls, with six fours and four sixes.
Contributions from Abhishek Sharma (17), Tilak Varma (26) and Axar Patel (23) helped steady the innings after three early wickets. Lungi Ngidi was the pick of the South African bowlers with figures of 3 for 31.
In response, South Africa crumbled to 74 all out in just 12.3 overs – their lowest T20I total and falling short of the 87 they achieved in Rajkot in 2022. Jasprit Bumrah reached the 100-wicket mark in T20Is, finishing with clean figures of 2 for 17.
Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakravarthy also took two wickets each while Axar Patel excelled with 2 for 7. The visitors never recovered after Quinton de Kock fell for a duck in the opener and continued to lose wickets in bunches during their chase.
