Ousmane Dembele silences the doubters with a historic World Cup hat-trick for France

For years, Ousmane Dembele has been one of France’s greatest mysteries.

The talent was never in doubt. Gifted with lightning pace, two-footed dribbling and the ability to unlock any defence, Dembele has been tipped to become one of the best in the world since bursting onto the scene. Although he flashed flashes at club level, his international career never quite took off.

His progress was interrupted by injuries, he was haunted by inconsistency and Kylian Mbappe is emerging as France’s undisputed superstarDembele often found himself in a supporting role. His blue numbers did not silence critics. It took him nearly four years after his France debut to score his first three international goals, a return that hardly reflected his immense ability.

Norway vs France, FIFA World Cup 2026: Update

Fast forward to the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the conversation has completely changed.

DEFINING DISPLAYS

France’s Group I final clash with Norway has been billed as a battle between Mbappe and Erling Haaland, two of football’s biggest stars. Instead, it was the reigning Ballon d’Or winner who stole the headlines.

With Haaland rested after Norway secured qualification to the round of 32, Dembele took center stage and produced the best performance of his international career.

His first goal came after just seven minutes. He received the ball on the right wing, jumped over Fredrik Bjorkan with his quick feet and unstoppably shot past the Norwegian goalkeeper Egil Selvik.

The second was even more ruthless. France started at pace and Dembele had Mbappe available on his right, but the winger backed up, cut inside and curled a superb strike into the far corner from the outside. Dembele and Mbappe are France’s keys in attack. (Image: Reuters)

He completed his hat trick in the 32nd minute. A clever pass from Aurelien Tchouameni found him inside the box where Dembele danced past the defender with a series of feints before calmly finishing his finish into the bottom corner.

It was clinical, calm and utterly devastating.

HISTORY MADE

The treble secured Dembele’s place in French football history.

He became only the fourth French player to score a hat-trick at the World Cup, joining Just Fontaine, who did it twice during the 1958 tournament, and Mbappe, whose hat-trick against Argentina in the 2022 final remains one of the competition’s most iconic performances.

His performances also entered the wider World Cup record books.

Dembele’s was the sixth first-half hat-trick in men’s World Cup history and the first since Oleg Salenko scored three before the break for Russia against Cameroon in 1994. Salenko scored five goals on the day, a record that briefly appeared within Dembele’s reach as France stormed in the opening period.

Data Opty has added another layer to success. The three goals had a combined expected goal value of just 0.19, making it the second-lowest xG total for any World Cup hat-trick between 1966 and 2026. Only Hungary’s Laszlo Kiss, whose famous treble against El Salvador in 1982 achieved a more unlikely World Cup hat-trick, achieved 0.17 xG.

THE NEW LEADER

Dembele’s transformation didn’t happen overnight.

His Ballon d’Or triumph earlier this year signaled that he had finally fulfilled his extraordinary potential that coaches, teammates and fans have seen for nearly a decade. But his performance against Norway was different. It wasn’t just about spectacular goals. It was about authority.

For so long, France looked to Mbappe for inspiration in his greatest moments. Against Norway, Dembele became the focal point of every attack, demanding the ball, taking charge and punishing every defensive mistake with ruthless precision.

The move made France an even more dangerous proposition heading into the knockout stages. Opponents can no longer focus solely on Mbappe. Dembele has proven to be a true match winner capable of deciding games on the biggest stage. Ousmane Dembele is finding his mojo for France. (Image: Reuters)

The match may have been marketed as Mbappe versus Haaland, but neither was the story.

On a night when the spotlight was expected to shine elsewhere, Ousmane Dembele reminded the footballing world why he is a Ballon d’Or winner. More importantly, he showed that after years of promise, failure and exploration, he has finally become the player France always believed he could be.
