Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Johannesburg on Friday ahead of the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit.
During the meeting, the Albanians expressed their condolences over the terrorist attack in Red Fort and the bus crash in Saudi Arabia, in which several Indian Umrah pilgrims lost their lives.
“We have a lot to discuss and our relationship is very strong. I think the economic relations that we can further strengthen and our defense and security ties are also very important for the future. And I look forward to our discussion today,” Albanese added.
This is the first G20 summit to be held in Africa. The African Union became a member of the G20 during India’s chairmanship in 2023.
The theme of this year’s G20 was “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability”, with which South Africa carried forward the results of previous summits held in New Delhi, India, and in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In his exit statement, Prime Minister Modi said the summit would be an opportunity to discuss key global issues.
“At the summit, I will present India’s perspective in line with our vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and ‘One Country, One Family and One Future’.
“I look forward to my interactions with the leaders of the partner countries and participation in the 6th IBSA Summit scheduled on the sidelines of the summit,” Modi added.
Upon his arrival at the hotel, a group of children recited a prayer to welcome him. Local artists performed traditional dances and showed cultural heritage.
The Prime Minister also interacted with children who recited Vedic mantras. He was seen clapping to the tunes of musical performances.
“Deeply moved by the warm welcome from the Indian community in Johannesburg. This affection reflects the enduring bond between India and South Africa. Rooted in history and strengthened by shared values, these bonds continue to grow stronger!” Modi said.
He said the cultural connection between India and South Africa is “truly gratifying and timeless”.
“In Johannesburg, my young friends chanted Ganapati Prarthana, Shanti Mantra and other divine prayers with great devotion. Such moments reaffirm the enduring bond between our people,” he added.
