The Arts College Building of Hyderabad’s Osmania University (OU) has become the third structure in India, which received the registration of the trademark for its external design.
The OU Arts College building, which was built in 1939, has long been a symbol of the rich architectural and educational heritage of Hyderabad. With this trademark registration, the university now holds exclusive rights to use the building image for any commercial purposes that protect it from unauthorized replication and branding, the edition said.
Subhayit Saha, a trademark agent with Resolecute Group, which facilitated this application, confirmed that this is only the third case in India, where the building was awarded a trademark. The first two were the Hotel Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai in 2017 and Bombay Stock Exchange. “Several iconic structures such as T-Hub and T-Works could also consider this path to maintain their different architectural identities,” he added.
The head of the IPR chairman at the Osmania University, under the Ministry of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), GB Reddy said that the trademark would act as a guarantee against “Copycat Architecture”, an increasing practice of imitating established proposals.
