The southwest monsoon worsened the coastal erosion along the Pallithura coastal belt in Thiruvananthapuram and flooded the houses along the coast. The state government should take urgent steps to rehabilitate affected people in the section, said the leader of the opposition VD Satheesan. On Thursday he spoke to the media after visiting the area and affected people in Pallithura.
The situation in Pallithura is a direct reflection of an emergency in coastal areas. The sea rises towards the coast with every season. Up to 25 houses in one lane are at high risk, while about 40 houses in another section are also endangered. Although plans for rehabilitation of affected people were set, none of them took place, he said. People cannot go far from the coastal area. The government should take steps towards their rehabilitation on government grounds on the coast, he said.
