Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday (April 17, 2026) said the defeat of the Constitution Amendment Bill linked to the Women’s Reservation Act marked a decisive setback to the “attack on the Constitution” and claimed that the opposition had successfully blocked an attempt to change India’s electoral framework.
Speaking to reporters after the Constitution Amendment Bill failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi said the government’s bill was “not a women’s bill” but a political exercise to reshape representation.
