Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has declared that there will be no immunity for influential drug offenders in Kerala.
Addressing the legislature during question hour on Tuesday (June 23, 2026), the minister said the government would take tough action under the state’s anti-drugs operation, Operation Toofan, against offenders regardless of their status.
Referring to the alleged prevalence of drug use at DJ parties, fancy hotels and film-related gatherings, he said strong action would be taken and that the law would be applied equally to all, “including film personalities and other influential people”.
He added that youth and student organizations will be involved in the nationwide event as part of a major awareness campaign aimed at preventing substance abuse among young people.
Public education against campaign abuse
Addressing the legislature during question hour, the minister said the government also plans to bring together voluntary groups, social and religious organizations to strengthen public awareness about drug abuse.
According to the minister, the Kerala police registered 2,954 cases related to possession of various prohibited narcotics between June 2 and June 17 under Operation Toofan. In addition, 1,421 cases were registered under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) related to violations of regulations related to tobacco products.
As part of intensifying education and rehabilitation efforts. More than 2,152 anti-drug education courses and 167 counseling sessions were held in the districts. In addition, 12 people struggling with substance abuse were referred to de-addiction centers for treatment and rehabilitation.
In addition, dedicated helpline numbers and a WhatsApp facility launched for the public to confidentially share information related to drug trafficking and consumption received more than 1,600 phone calls and 1,116 WhatsApp messages.
