The Kozhikode city police deployed drones and a specially trained K9 unit and stepped up surveillance and enforcement against drug peddlers as part of ‘Operation Toofan’, an anti-drug drive.

On Wednesday (June 10, 2026), the squad, supported by about 35 police personnel from various stations, carried out blitz checks at various bus terminals and parking lots within the city limits to identify and apprehend the suspects.

The operation involved specially trained dog 296 Blacky along with the police drone tracking unit and a 20-member strike team led by District Superintendent of Police (Kozhikode City) Merin Joseph. The team was coordinated by Sub-Inspector Nimin K. Divakaran.

Police officers overseeing the action at the district level said the frequency of field-level checks would be increased in the coming days based on fresh intelligence. They also said that the upcoming search operation will mainly focus on educational institutions, colleges, schools and other important places.
