Openai reportedly lags behind plans with its GPT-5 development. According to the report, AI companies bring successors to GPT-4 to the required level of capability, including shortages of training data and large funding requirements. The artificial intelligence (AI) model is said to be in development for more than 18 months, which is significantly higher than the company’s initial plan. It is not clear when the Large Language Model (LLM) may finally make its debut.
OpenAI’s GPT-5 development bureau reportedly encountered obstacles
The Wall Street Journal reported that the GPT-5 project (also code-named Orion) is currently lagging behind plans and when it may work. The publication quoted unnamed people familiar with the matter asserting that two main issues AI companies are currently dealing with are the expense of developing the model, the lack of sufficient training data to make it smart enough.
According to the report, OpenAI has conducted two large training courses for GPT-5, each meeting lasted for several months and conducted a lot of data. However, the company reportedly faces unexpected problems every time, preventing it from getting the results it needs. It is worth noting that the six-month training period of GPT-5 is said to have lost about US$500 million (approximately Rs 42,600 crore) to the company.
At present, the GPT-5 is said to be slightly biased than the existing OpenAI model. However, this is reportedly not enough to make users and businesses profitable, and the profits cannot be cashed out given the huge cost of the project.
The standpoint of things, OpenAI may need several more training courses to get the AI model to the required level of intelligence. However, if the company faces a data shortage, it can further delay training of the model. The delay is reportedly not pleased with Openai’s biggest supporter Microsoft. The tech giant reportedly believes that the GPT-5 will be released in mid-2024, but that is not the case.
