Openai CEO Sam Altman revealed last week that the company has decided not to release the O3 artificial intelligence (AI) model. In January, the company launched the O3-Mini model to all CHATGPT users, and is expected to launch a more capable O3 model this month. However, Altman shared details about its AI roadmap, revealing that the company will focus on a unified GPT-5 model that integrates O3 functionality, rather than a standalone O3 model release.
Openai starts GPT-4.5 before GPT-5
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the CEO of OpenAI details the roadmap for GPT-4.5 and GPT-5. The company said that with the next two models released, it will simplify its product offerings to eliminate friction users’ experiences while choosing different models for different tasks.
Altman said that starting with GPT-5, the company will focus on providing “unified intelligence” that the model has access to all the different OpenAI tools and can understand when and when to use reasoning. This way, the end user will not have to think about which model is suitable for which task.
To achieve this, OpenAI CEO said that the capabilities of O3 will be integrated into the GPT-5 AI model. This also means that the O3 model will not be released independently. AI companies may effectively end the independent release of the O series AI model.
The company is also reshaping its layer-based product strategy with GPT-5. Altman said the GPT-5 AI model will be used to all ChatGpt users at startup, while users on the free layer will get unlimited levels of chat access in standard intelligence settings. This will be affected by the company’s abuse threshold and may prevent any incidents of model distillation.
Compared to the Free Layer, Chatgpt Pro subscribers will be able to run GPT-5 at a higher level of intelligence, and Pro subscribers will get the highest level of intelligence. The fuzzy nomenclature around “intelligence” may be because the company doesn’t want to reveal the capabilities of each version of the AI model. However, Altman does reveal that the GPT-5 model will combine advanced voice, canvas, search, in-depth research, and more.
However, before introducing anything, OpenAI is planning to launch the GPT-4.5 AI model, which will be the company’s last non-link (non-COT) model. Although Altman did not disclose any release dates, he stressed that the model could arrive in the next few weeks or months. Interestingly, he also revealed that GPT-4.5 is called Orion internally, which is a highly rumored model for GPT-5.
