Openai announced several upgrades to its Canvas feature on Saturday. Sandbox-style pop-ups allow users to work with chatbots for inline editing, formatting and encoding, the window was first released in early beta in October 2024. It then launched to all users in December 2024. Now, AI companies have added support for the O1 Artificial Intelligence (AI) model to the feature. Also, it is now being added to the ChatGpt app for MacOS on all user tiers.
OpenAI upgrades Chatgpt’s canvas function
AI has announced a new update to Canvas in an article on X (formerly known as Twitter). So far, paid subscribers can use O1 AI models for general output generation, however, inference-focused models are not available in the canvas. Now, users who subscribe to the Chatgpt Plus, Teams and Pro plans will use canvas with the O1 model.
To use the O1 model with the canvas, the user will first have to select the AI model from the model selector. After that, accessing the canvas through the “/canvas” command or the toolbox icon will open the sandbox interface using the O1 function.
Additionally, you can now use canvas on the Chatgpt desktop application for MacOS. Canvas can be used with all paid layers. However, free users will not be able to access the O1 model. It is worth noting that this feature is only available in the web version of the platform. Openai has not shared any plans to scroll it to a mobile app or Windows app.
In addition, the functionality of the canvas is also being expanded to support HTML and React code. The tool will be able to render these encoding languages next to existing support for JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++ or PHP. Currently, support for HTML and REACT is also limited to paid subscribers.
OpenAI also revealed that enterprises and EDU subscribers will receive O1 model support in the next few weeks, and will also receive HTML access and React rendering.
It is worth noting that the canvas is a collaborative sandbox interface where both human users and AI can work together on the project. After Chatgpt generates output according to the prompt, the user can take over and respond to it for inline editing. Openai stresses that the feature is suitable for creative writing tasks and coding-related work.
