Openai is reportedly researching advertising to create new revenue streams. According to the report, AI companies are considering displaying ads on the company’s AI-powered chatbot platform Chatgpt. However, there is no decision on how or how these ads are displayed. One guess is that these ads can be displayed to Chatgpt’s free users, but the company can also take a route similar to confusion, which is testing to display ads to all users.
Advertisements on chatgpt
According to a report from the Financial Times, AI companies are viewing advertising on Chatgpt as a viable option to boost their revenue. OpenAI’s chief financial officer Sarah Friar told the publication in an interview that the company is considering creating an advertising-based revenue model, but added that the idea is “an idea of when and where we implement them.”
The report added that Friar also issued a statement following the interview, with the CFO stressing that Openai’s existing business model is witnessing accelerated growth, with a focus on taking advantage of the opportunities therein. “While we are willing to explore other sources of income in the future, we have no active plans to pursue advertising,” Frial told the Financial Times.
Despite contradictory comments on the topic, the CFO has not completely ruled out the decision to display ads on Chatgpt in the future. The report also noted that, according to unnamed people familiar with the matter, Openai has been hiring people who specialize in advertising from competitors such as Meta and Google.
Ad-based revenue models are also easy to deploy and earn. Recently, Confusion has also been testing the ads on its platform as sponsored content. While the project is in the pilot phase and is only shown in the United States, it may be expanded to other regions. Google also began displaying ads on AI overview, which are summaries generated by AI that are displayed on its search platform.
However, Openai has also been exploring other avenues to generate revenue. Earlier this year, it partnered with Apple to integrate Chatgpt with the tech giant’s operating systems. AI companies also recently launched its AI-powered search engine, which reportedly plans to release AI agents and Sora video models.
