Openai is reportedly considering building humanoid robots, which could be an extension of its existing intelligence software stack. According to the report, AI companies have conducted discussions about entering robotic spaces and specifically building human robots. The company’s interest in robotics is nothing new, as it once had an active robotics division that was abandoned before releasing the GPT-3 artificial intelligence (AI) model. Additionally, Openai continues to invest in several robot startups through its venture capital division.

The information reported on AI companies’ ambitions to build humanoid robots. The publication quotes two people who asked not to be named, claiming that Openai has recently considered developing robots that look like humans. However, the report does not disclose whether these are just preliminary discussions or whether ChatGpt Maker has prepared a roadmap.
As mentioned above, Openai has had an active robotics division since its inception, although it has not released any products or prototypes. In 2021, Openai co-founder Wojciech Zaremba (who also leads the robotics department) confirmed that the division has been abandoned. In the podcast, he stressed that the lack of training data was the main reason for the shutdown because the team felt that these systems could not bring the systems to the required level of intelligence.
But, earlier this year, an IoT World Report earlier this year said Openai had opened several work lists for research engineers to join the robotics team. The description reportedly stressed that the study had to train multi-modal large language models to “unlock new features for our partners’ robots.”
These “partners” can refer to several robotics startups invested in by AI companies. Openai invested in a round of funding led by Jeff Bezos, Microsoft, Nvidia and Intel in February 2024. The company also invests in 1X technology and helps integrate GPT AI models into startup robots. In November, it also invested in Physical Intelligence, a startup that develops AI-based that brings human-like understanding and dexterity to robots.
With limited information, it is difficult to speculate on the company’s vision with humanoid robots. But with the release of the O3 series’ AI model focused on advanced reasoning, the company may be planning to build robots that can perform various real-world tasks in factories and other settings using verbal commands.
