Openai introduced an official phone number on Wednesday. People in eligible areas can make this number access the company’s chatbot and interact verbally. Additionally, people living in other parts of the world can save contacts and text messages on WhatsApp to talk to a Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot. Currently, voice calls are 15 minutes a month, but AI companies say it may change in the future.
Openai now allows people to call Chatgpt
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Openai announced a new Chatgpt phone number. This number is sold as a vanity telephone for 1-800-Chatgpt (+1-800-242-8478). Name brand phone numbers follow the letters on the keyboard (a, b and c, refer to 2; d, e and f refer to 3, etc.), making the numbers easy to remember. The “800” code means that the number is free and the caller will not have to bear the cost. This feature is currently only available in Canada and the United States.
Openai stressed that people can only get 15 minutes of calls per month at present. However, the company can change availability and restrictions in the future. Those who live outside the above-mentioned countries can still access Chatgpt by phone number, but only on WhatsApp.
After saving the number, WhatsApp users can send messages to chatgpt as they do on the official app or website. Currently, the WhatsApp extension for chatbots only supports text as input and output. In addition, other features are not available on WhatsApp or phone, such as searching, canvas and image generation via DALL-E.
It is worth noting that OpenAI said the phone function does not require a smartphone, and that the function works the same way on feature phones.
Openai has been actively promoting the default AI chatbot platform for people. The company has partnered with Microsoft and Apple to provide Large Language Models (LLMS). Chatgpt has also launched Windows and Macos this year. The latest move may be an AI company trying to target rural populations that either don’t have a lot of data to spend or have not experienced a chatbot.
