OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that GPT-4.5 is not designed to surpass all benchmarks but rather to enhance conversational intelligence. “This is not a reasoning model, nor does it break the benchmark. The model focuses on improving dialogue fluency, understanding nuanced human intentions, and delivering more natural, context-aware responses.
According to OpenAI, GPT-4.5 exhibits a higher emotional quotient (EQ) and a broader knowledge base, enabling it to produce better outputs in creative writing, programming, and practical problem-solving. The company also claims the model has fewer instances of “hallucinations” (inaccurate or fabricated responses) compared to its predecessors.
Benchmark Performance and Developer Access
Internal benchmarks reveal that GPT-4.5 outperforms previous models in multi-language understanding (MMLU) and coding-related tasks. While it does not rely on test-time computations to enhance reasoning, the model demonstrates improved real-time reasoning as a core capability.
Developers can explore GPT-4.5 through OpenAI’s API, Assistant API, and Batch API, with the model integrated into all paid ChatGPT plans. OpenAI aims to gather feedback during the research preview to refine the model further.
