The Ongole Government General Hospital on Wednesday conducted a simulated mass disaster management exercise to test its emergency preparedness. The exercise simulated a road accident involving a bus and an autorickshaw in which eight people were injured. Hospital staff activated the orange alert to demonstrate their readiness to handle mass casualty situations.
The exercise began when the 108 emergency call reached the central staff doctor. Upon receiving information about the simulated collision, the officer immediately activated the emergency protocol. The chief medical officer was alerted and issued an orange alert across the emergency department, mobilizing a multidisciplinary team of doctors, specialists and support staff in the trauma department.
As two ambulances arrived at the hospital, paramedics and medical staff deployed stretchers and wheelchairs to move the injured. A senior hospital official said the priority was to ensure not a single second was lost between the scene of the accident and the treatment table, and emphasized coordination between the hospital’s 108 emergency services and in-house medical teams.
Superintendent S. Manikya Rao, Head of Anesthesia Jayasundaram, Administrator Adaiah, Head of Orthopedics Ahmed Basha, Central Staff Doctor Madhavilatha and Assistant District Doctor Sunil Gavaskar supervised the exercise.
