Ongole Collector calls on public to participate in solid waste management

As part of the month-long ‘Operation Clean Sweep’ program in the state, the Ongole Municipal Corporation (OMC) on Wednesday launched a cleaning drive of the Pothuraju canal along a 60-feet long road in the city.
Prakasam District Collector P. Raja Babu attended the program and inspected the dewatering works. He urged the public to take their share of responsibility in solid waste management while creating awareness among the people.
Speaking to the media on the occasion, the Collector said, “‘Operation Clean Sweep was conducted in the district for a month as per the directions of the state government. In this special drive, people were made aware of the importance of keeping the roads clean during the first week.’
“The center of attention is now on canal and sewerage management in the second week. Central government has formulated special rules for solid waste management as per Supreme Court orders,” informed the Collector. The collector further said that these programs are being conducted every week as per the guidelines of the state government to implement solid waste management rules. He urged the public not to use plastic and not to throw plastic or other waste into the canals.
Mr. Raja Babu also said that OMC is taking steps to keep the city clean. He urged people to do their part and cooperate with the authorities in maintaining hygiene. He said cleanliness brings health as well as respect.
PDCC Bank Chairman Kamepalli Seetharamaiah, Agriculture Market Committee Chairman Rachagarla Venkat Rao, OMC Commissioner Venkata Krishnaiah and ITC representatives participated in the programme. They revealed pamphlets on solid waste management rules.
