When India is preparing to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights again captured the imagination of the nation – this time on the social media. Most of the offices, traditionally celebrated for five days, starting with Dhanteras and ending Bhai Dooj, gives a holiday only on the main day, Lakshmi Puja. However, one social media user has triggered a conversation by demanding a week’s holiday to mark the festivities.
Petition for the whole week of diwali on holiday
Speaking to x, the individual wrote: “Request for the whole week diwali as a holiday for all Indians.” The post quickly gained attention, while several users reacted humorously and thoughtfully.
One user suggested: “Ek Baar Narayan Murthy Sir Ko Bhi Pooch Lete. It concerned co-founder of Infosys Narayan Murty, who previously designed a 70-hour working week, which many considered too strict.

Mixed reactions from social media
Other answers emphasized the Indian working culture and one user wrote: “We are Indians, we have slave’s thinking, we do not believe in vacation or balance in working life. Many of us will also work on Diwali.” Another joked: “The government will still approve, your manager will not be.”
Some comments have made a comparison with the holidays in other countries. “Do it for two weeks, combine Navratri, Dussehra, Diwali. The Chinese take two weeks off for the Chinese New Year and the Japanese take 11 days off to Golden Week. There’s a lot of precedens,” one user wrote.
Others thought about the nature of the festival today. “So that the whole week can be deafly crazy, noisy and soiled? If people can celebrate a beautiful way of it with Diyas and Segethers, then we can call it a holiday. Now it’s just an event of money combustion, nothing to do with light or faith,” one user said.
Another appreciated the idea and called it “finally, a petition that connects the nation”.
The conversation of social media comes in the middle of a growing debate on the balance between work and private life and cultural celebrations in India.
