On Saturday, a 17 -year -old boy from Chenkal in the district was confirmed by a new case of amoebic meningoencephalitis, with the total number of infection from the district this year under 14 to 14 years.
The boy was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.
According to medical officials, the boy reported a few days ago swimming in the pool in the tourist village of Aakkulam. After confirming amoebic meningoencephalitis, officials gathered samples of water from the pool and asked the officials of tourism to close the pool until the next warning.
Swimming in contaminated water or water in swimming pools that are not sufficiently chlorinated open the risk of being infected with amoebic meningoencephalitis, especially if someone flows through the head underwater or immerses into the pool, causing water to enter the nostril
Health officials claimed that more cases were reported because doctors specifically sought amoeba in all cases of acute encephalitis syndrome with unknown etiology.
They said it was quite worrying that several cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis have been diagnosed in people with immunocompromise such as cancer, mainly for acanthamoeba
“In addition to cases diagnosed in the district, we also have cases from neighboring countries, several of which are undergoing cancer treatment.
