TThe dispute of Almatti Dam, which at the end of the 90’s and early 2000 in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh shaken by political and international relations, appeared in Telangana.
Recently, Karnataka has decided to increase the height of the dam and claims that it is in accordance with the price of the Krishna Water Dissates 2013 (KWDT-II) in 2013 and uses “excess water flowing into the sea”. This revived concerns in Telangana about the impact of irrigation.
The dam, part of the UPPER Krishna project in North Karnataka, is a water and irrigation equipment on the Krishna River. Originally designed with a full tank level of 524,256 meters, it was limited to 519.6 meters with the intervention of the Supreme Court.
As a lower coastal state, Telangana relies strongly on the flow of Krishna for drinking water and irrigation in its southern districts. Any attempt to increase Almatti storage would mean detaining more water upstream, which would leave little for projects.
This matter was expected that in the telangana between the congress and the opposition of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Bharatiya Janata (BJP) (BJP). BRS accused the main Minister A. Revant Reddy of not talking openly on this issue. The leader BRS B. Vinod Kumar pointed out that the main minister Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis has already formally opposed Karnatakaho movement and demanded why Telangana had not shown a similar urgency.
Mr. Reddy often assured people that “no drop of telangany’s share will be endangered.” However, these remarks were made in connection with the telangana disputes with Andhra Pradesh. At the Almatti dam, its silence provided only the opposition. MLC K. Kavitha said that Telangana would be left without water, which would allow people to “play cricket in the Krishna River”.
The Minister of irrigation N. Uttam Kumar Reddy explained that Telangana would submit his case before the Supreme Court, where the matter is still waiting. He added that the state, if necessary, starts the management of contempt, because the price of the tribunal Brijesh Kumar (price kwdt-II) remains under the stay. The Minister is also planned at KWDT-II 23 September.
Bets for Telangana are high. Much of the population in Mahabubnagar, Nalgond, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad’s The surrounding rural belts depend on the river. Drinking water and irrigation projects, such as the Palmura – Reddy Lift Lift Lift Scheme, the Dindi project, the Srisailam left bank and the numerous medium irrigation systems, draw water from the Krishna tide. Memories of past drought and crops failing make the water a politically explosive object.
The timing could not be worse for Congress. With the approaching elections of local authorities, country voters, especially farmers, are monitored carefully. If it is perceived as it does not prevent the interests of the state, the government risks resistance.
Almatti was historically a point of lightning. In 1996 he led the leader of the congress party Andhra Pradesh Congress, P. Janardhan Reddy, the delegation to the place of the dam and increased the temples on both sides of the border. Under pressure from Karnataka, the Government of Chandrababa Naida led by Telugu Desam Page was also mobilized and sent its own delegation. This question caused problems with the right and order in the border neighborhoods. Although it retreated with the court intervention, the latest decision to increase the height of the dam revived the memories of the past conflicts.
For farmers Telangany, almatti is not only a legal matter, but also the one that concerns their survival. Telangan immediate focus will be on hearing kwdt-II. The opposition of Maharashtry towards the new height will bring the weight of the state’s argument.
In addition to the courts, it is a greater challenge for the political congress. Since BRS plans to emphasize the problem, Congress cannot afford to look passive. Almatti could become the point of the Assembly for the opposition to the corner of the Congress government during the local body elections. Also with a stage set for potential throw -in between two -controlled congresses, the response of the party command will be important. The only consolation for the TELANGANA Congress is that the tanks over the irrigation projects are overflowing and the tanks are filled only after heavy rains this year.
