
On Monday, commuting buses, civil society members, and volunteers in Bengalur, World without cars, called for an urgent investment in public transport in the city, especially buses.
Under the banner of the nationwide campaign “Double The Bus”, the Assembly was organized at the bus stops of Jal Vayu Vihar (Kammanahalli) and Agara (HSR), where the participants held the labels, interact with citizens and push the creators of the creators to prefer buses like city towns.
According to volunteers, the civic campaign, which took place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, was also held in several cities, including Chennai, Bombai, Nagpur, Pune and Kochi. In Bengalur, around a hundred commuters took part in key arterial bus routes and strengthened the demand for double buses to ensure fair, reliable and sustainable transport.
According to campaign organizers, 81% of bulk commuting cities relies on BMTC buses with an average daily rider over 42 Lakh. “Despite this dependence commuting normally faces overfill, delay and long waiting due to insufficient fleet size,” said Sachin Pandith, volunteer, HSR Community Task Force.
“Buses are a rescue rope of Bengalur, but passengers fight every day with cramped travel and unpredictable plans. Double the number of buses not only ensures safer and more affordable ways, but also helps reduce overload and pollution in the city,” he added.
The fighters stressed that the strengthening of bus fleets is crucial to achieve the goals of sustainable mobility, especially because the city is struggling with the growing numbers of private vehicles and deteriorating traffic overload. They urged the state government and BMTC to increase public transport budget allocations, modernized fleets, and adopt policy that buses to the center of urban planning.
