Days after India won the T20 World Cup, former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar’s quirky take on the achievement has gone viral. Speaking on X on Tuesday, March 10, Manjrekar said that according to cricket fans, all ICC trophies are not equal. The former batsman believed that according to fans, winning the ODI World Cup and the WTC Championship is a bigger achievement than winning the T20 World Cup.

Incidentally, India failed to win the ODI World Cup 2023 which was held in their own backyard. The team also failed to reach the final of the World Test Championship last season after abysmal setbacks against New Zealand and South Africa.
However, in this period, the Indian T20I team played fantastic cricket and won back-to-back T20 World Cups, becoming the first team in the history of the competition to achieve this unique feat.
Fans criticized Manjrekar for his opinion and called for the timing.
“That’s all true. But probably the worst time to say that is right after winning the WC T20. No one is holding a gun to your head and asking you to tell bitter truths. It’s like Sania Mirza celebrating becoming world number one and you replying ‘In doubles’,” comedian Abijit Ganguly responded to Manjrekar’s tweetkar.
The former player’s opinion seemed to upset the fans as well.
Meanwhile, India dominated the T20 World Cup final to lift their second consecutive trophy in the format. India beat New Zealand by a mammoth margin of 96 runs to defend their crown. Jasprit Bumrah and Sanju Samson were the stars of the show in the match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
MANJREKAR’S HISTORY OF CONTROVERSIAL COMMENTS
This is not the first time Sanjay Manjrekar has created a stir on social media with his comments. In 2024, Manjrekar hit out at India coach Gautam Gambhir over his behavior in press conferences.
In a strongly worded statement ahead of the 2024-25 Vorder-Gavaskar Trophy, Manjrekar slammed Gambhir’s press conference and said the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should keep him away from press duties.
Manjrekar went on to say that Gambhir lacks the “manner” to represent the Indian cricket team in press meets and should instead stay behind the scenes and focus on his work.
“Just watched Gambhir in a press conference. It might be wise for @BCCI to keep him away from such duties, let him work behind the scenes. He doesn’t have the right demeanor or words when interacting with them. Rohit & Agarkar, much better guys to face the media,” Manjrekar wrote on X,
