O. Sadasivan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) was elected as the Mayor of Kozhikode Municipal Corporation on Friday (December 26, 2025). He was pitted against SK Aboobakker of the Indian National Congress and Nambidi Narayanan of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the first round of voting in which they received 35, 28 and 13 votes respectively.
Mr. Narayanan was disqualified for the second round of voting in which BJP councilors stayed out. The top two candidates received 33 and 28 votes, while two were rejected.
Meanwhile, S. Jayasree of the CPI(M) was elected deputy mayor in a separate election held in the afternoon. This time, she had competition for the post reserved for women from Fathima Thehlia of the Indian Union Muslim League and Navya Haridas of the BJP. The procedure was the same as with the mayor. The candidates got 35, 28 and 13 votes respectively in the first round, after which Ms. Haridas was eliminated. In the final round, Ms. Jayasree got 35 and Ms. Thehlia 28 votes, while the BJP councilors did not cast their votes.
District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh presided over both the elections. He administered the oath to Mr. Sadasivan, who in turn administered the oath to Mrs. Jayasree.
Mr Sadasivan later told the media that the entire council would work together to develop the city and that a stronger opposition was a positive factor. He said he would try to resolve issues related to sewage treatment plants, shifting of Palayam market and several pending projects through discussions.
He added that waste management was also a top priority for the new council and that he himself, as a farmer, is particularly interested in implementing projects in the agricultural sector that will really benefit the public.
