Devon Conways second Test double century powered New Zealand to 575 for eight declared before the West Indies responded with an unbeaten 110-run opening partnership on the second day of the third Test. Conways 227, supported by Tom Lathams 145 and Rachin Ravindras unbeaten 72, put the hosts in check but openers John Campbell and Brandon King responded positively late in the day. New Zealand, who led the series 1-0 after the win and the draw, looked to press home their advantage, but opener attempts from the West Indies kept the match level going into the third day.
New Zealand vs West Indies 3rd Test Day 2: Live Updates | Scorecard
Conway’s innings, which lasted nearly eight-and-a-half hours, was the centerpiece of the New Zealand side. He reached his double century from 316 balls and finished with 227 from 367 deliveries, including 31 boundaries. Conways effort eclipsed his previous Test best, surpassing the 200 made on debut at Lords in 2021. Latham and Conways 323-run opening stand laid a solid foundation as Ravindra accelerated towards a declaration with 72 not out, supported by Ajaz Patels 30 not out in an unbroken partnership of 39 runs.
West Indies, missing Kemar Roach with a hamstring injury and Shai Hope with illness, bowled out 155 overs, including 65 on the second day. Despite being the bowlers, the visitors improved, finding the edge of the bat and providing four catches to wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach. Justin Greaves stood out with figures of 2 for 83 from 29 overs, while wickets also fell to regular probing by the rest of the attack, including the dismissal of night watchman Jacob Duffy and Kane Williamson before lunch.
After lunch New Zealand’s middle order struggled as they lost Daryl Mitchell for 11 and Tom Blundell for 4. Glen Phillips added 29 before falling in the last over. With time running out, Ravindra picked up the scoring, hitting six fours and two sixes before the declaration at around 5:00 pm, leaving the New Zealand bowlers with about 90 minutes to spare.
However, the West Indies openers responded with intent, scoring freely and reaching 110 for no loss at stumps from just 23 overs. King reached his half-century off 63 balls and remained unbeaten on 55 while Campbell was 45 not out. New Zealand’s bowlers struggled for consistency, Zak Foulkes conceding 39 runs from six overs as the visitors capitalized on erratic lengths in the fading light.
Reflecting on the day, Rachin Ravindra said: We would have liked a wicket at the end, but the biscuit is crumbling like that. Both batted well, King and Campbell, and showed the ability to punish when we missed. Hopefully the pitch will wear a bit from now on and offer some to the supporters. With West Indies replying and New Zealand holding the lead in the series, the match remains finely poised as both sides look to capitalize on the momentum on day three.
