The management of Nair Service Society (NSS) has denied permission for security checks at Mannam Samadhi Mandapam in Perunna ahead of Vice President CP Radhakrishnan’s visit to Changanassery in Kottayam on Saturday. The community organization’s decision, taken on Friday, prompted a security team comprising the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Kerala Police to withdraw without conducting checks, prompting a review of the vice president’s itinerary.
According to the police, the Vice President is scheduled to arrive in Changanassery to attend the closing celebrations of SB College’s centenary on Saturday. His itinerary includes landing at NSS Hindu College grounds in Perunna and proceeding to the nearby Mannam Samadhi to pay floral tributes. However, NSS objections complicated these plans.
“The Vice President’s office has announced its intention to pay floral tributes at Mannam Samadhi. However, NSS authorities have expressed reservations about the security checks at the Samadhi Mandapam. We have temporarily suspended the checks and informed the Vice President’s office and are awaiting further instructions,” official sources said. NSS sources said that the objection was exclusively related to inspections at the Samadhi Mandapam involving police dogs.
Rao’s visit
In 1996, then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao’s visit to the NSS headquarters sparked controversy following allegations that security personnel had desecrated the Mannam Samadhi by entering it wearing shoes. The incident caused considerable backlash, which led to the National Democratic Party (NDP), the political party of the NSS, which was later disbanded, withdrawing from the UDF-led Congress. Later, BJP leader LK Advani was also denied permission to pay homage to the Samadhi during his Rath Yatra.
