Ajit Doval advisor landed in Moscow, where he should meet Russian officials. This comes in the middle of the threat to US President Donald Trump to store tariffs on Indian exports over the continuing purchase of Russian oil in the country.
An anonymous source told the Russian State intelligence agency TASS that it is expected that Doval will have “several meetings” with Russian officials on Thursday 7 August. According to the Russian media, Doval arrived in Moscow on Tuesday.
“A series of meetings is planned for August 7,” the source said in the TASS report. Doval was in Moscow last September.
Minister of external matters with Jaishankar is also scheduled to visit Moscow at the end of this month.
Jaishankar to also appear Russia
While Doval and Jaishankar’s are part of routine annual consultations and have been planned well in advance, there are growing tensions in India-USA related to the new Delhi bond with Moscow.
After storing a steep 25 % of the Trump tariff, Trump threatened to “significantly” increase it over the refusal of the new Delhi to stop buying Russian oil. Also on Monday, Trump warned that he would increase the tariff to India “essentially”, saying that India not only buys “a huge amount of Russian oil”, but also sells it “in an open market for large profits”.
Washington claims that India – along with China – helps President Vladimir Putin to finance his war in Ukraine through these purchases. The new Delhi defended its position and claimed that criticism from the US and the European Union about Indian trade in Russia was “unfounded and disproportionate”. It stressed that the EU and we continue to buy energy and other materials from Russia, if “such a trade is not even a national urge”.
Over the years, Modi has maintained close ties with Putin and visited Russia in October. The Russian President is expected to visit India at the end of this year – a trip that will probably be on the agenda during the Discussion Discussion and Jaishankar in Moscow, Bloomberg informed
In the middle of the growing tension with Trump last week, she reaffirmed her “stable and time -proven partnership” with Moscow last week, and has not yet driven its petroleum refiners to stop buying Russian oil.
