The Supreme Court on Monday (April 13, 2026) asked the Union government, the Election Commission of India and others to respond to a plea to introduce biometric identification mechanism of finger and iris in polling booths to prevent duplicate voting.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant considered the financial implications of introducing such a mechanism, but said it would consider the request before the next general election. According to the court, this step may also require a fundamental amendment of the law.
