On Thursday, the Gauhati High Court issued a notice to the state government against “arbitrary arrest of declared foreigners and their illegal backward hit”.
It is declared foreigners to be people who are the courts of quasi-social foreigners who are considered to be citizens who are not citizens. The Assam Police border wing refers to such people to these tribunals for suspicion of foreigners.
The case concerns the brothers Abu Bakkar Siddika and Akbar Ali. According to the petitioners, the authorities refused to provide details of their stay from May 25, on the day they were arrested.
“During today’s hearing, the state advisor admitted that the brothers were detained and are in custody of the border police,” said Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhura, one of the six advocates representing two detainees.
Other advocates are Aman Wadud, Dipesh K. Agarwal, Aniket Misra, Abdul Motin and Aminur Rahman.
The High Court announcement came two days after 14 proclaimed a foreigner, including a 51-year-old teacher from the Morigaon Central Assam district, allegedly pushed back to Bangladesh from the South Salmara-Manstach district.
However, the boundary security force, which has a border, said that they were Bangladesh nationals who were stopped in illegal sneaking into the country.
14 men and women were reported to be stuck on the ground of any man – a neutral belt on the border between two countries – with the Bangladesh border guard refused to let go.
