Thanks to the mango shower, the demand for electricity in Karnataka was less than expected in April. According to data provided by the energy department, the top demand in the month of 17,330 megawatts (MW) recorded 2 April.
At the beginning of this year, KJ George Minister said that the required electricity in the summer season is likely to exceed 18,500 MW per 19,000 MW. It came for top demand in February and March touched the unprecedented 18,350 MW and 18,395 MW. Officials after showers who go according to current trends say that it is unlikely that these figures would be broken in the remaining summer weeks.
While the demand for electricity in April 2024 ranged between 16,000 – 16,900 MW, this year, with the exception of the first week, demand for most days between 14,000 MW to 15,500 MW. “Usually, March and April are more difficult for us, as demand increases. This year, due to scattered rains throughout the state, demand did not go up as we thought,” said Gaurav Gupta, another main secretary, energy department.
In order to manage the expected demand, the energy department of the agreement with states such as Pandjab and Uttar Pradesh had to get energy to exchange. With an unexpected decline in demand, the ministry plans to sell excessive energy at higher rates.
“Even though we expect some rainfall in May, we can also face a dry spell, because the weather remains unpredictable. So we will maintain some power as a pillow in case the demand is rising and maybe taking the conspicuous call to sell excess energy in the open market. Gupta explained.
Require smaller than the previous year in the Bescom region
The highest demand for Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) was less than 100 MW compared to the previous year. While the top demand in April 2024 was 8 381 MW (recorded on April 30), in 2025 it was 8 233 MW (recorded 8 April).
“Given that Bengaluru had good rain, the use of air conditioning was not much this time. The agricultural loads were also smaller than the previous years,” said Bescom clerk.
