Former men’s doubles world number one Satwiksiraj Rankireddy clarifies the remarks he made after winning the bronze medal at the Thomas Cup in India. Satwik felt that his comments might have been misunderstood.
In an exclusive chat with India TodayVenting his frustration, Satwik highlighted the limited support system available to Indian athletes competing globally in their quest for excellence and bringing pride to the nation. The Indian ace has created a stir on social media when his Instagram story went viral because no representative of the badminton body or the government was present at the airport to welcome the bronze medal winning team on their return from Denmark.
In an open letter, Satwik clarified his intention behind his comments, saying he was not seeking fame or taking credit from other athletes.
“The last few days have brought a lot of attention to my recent comments regarding the lack of acceptance of our bronze medal at the Thomas Cup. While I am grateful for the overwhelming support and encouragement, I want to clarify my intent as I see many people stray from the original point.”
“My words do not come from a desire for personal glory or to take credit for someone else’s achievements. I have utmost respect for every athlete who brings glory to India, irrespective of the sport,” Satwik said. (Credit: Satwik X)
‘I JUST WANT TO KNOW OUR COUNTRY IS WATCHING’
Satwik said he wanted to convey a message that would start encouraging and celebrating such victories in a country irrespective of its size.
The India ace said he felt disheartened to see the Thomas Cup team greeted with silence, something he claimed would also discourage young talent.
Satwik called for celebrating all sports with equal passion and not judging by the color of the medal.
“My message was simple: we need to foster a culture that encourages and celebrates every victory, big or small. Whether it’s a World Cup medal or a podium finish in a global championship like the Thomas Cup, these moments represent years of sacrifice and hard work. When such milestones are met with silence, it’s depressing not just for us but for future generations of Indian athletes watching,” Satwik said.
“We don’t want money or grand parades, we just want to know that our country is watching and that our efforts are being seen. Let’s come together to support all sports with the same passion and ‘point of view.’ Next time, let it not be about who won more or less, but about celebrating everyone who dons the India jersey.”
“Thank you for standing by me. Let’s keep playing for the flag.”
The Thomas Cup bronze win was India’s second in badminton history after the gold medal in 2022.
