Not Gautam Gambhir, but VVS Laxman to coach India at 2026 Asian Games

Former India batsman VVS Laxman is all set to lead the Indian men’s cricket team as head coach at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The call-up was confirmed in a list of coaches and support staff approved by the Ministry of Sport on Thursday 3 September.

The continental multi-sport event will be held from September 19 to October 4, with the men’s cricket competition scheduled for September 24 to October 3. A total of 10 teams will compete in the tournament.

Laxman will take charge in the absence of regular head coach Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir is expected to remain in India to oversee the ODI squad during the three-match home series against West Indies starting on September 27.

Former cricketers Sunil Joshi, Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Subhadeep Ghosh will also be in India’s coaching group for the Asian Games. Maroof Fajandar was appointed as the team leader for the campaign.
