In a frenzied IPL playoff race where a solitary defeat can trigger existential dread, Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad chose an unexpected virtue after his side’s heavy defeat against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday: nonchalance.
For a fan base used to the calculated pragmatism of the Dhoni era, Gaikwad’s post-match assessment of the uncertain play-off in Chennai was met with distinct confusion. Rather than sound a warning, the young captain insisted that the defending champions’ task is actually “quite easy”. LSG vs CSK, IPL 2026: Highlights | Scorecard
“It’s a simple calculation for us,” Gaikwad said, dismissing the mathematical anxieties swirling around the franchise. “Win every game for as many games as we play. So I think nothing is easy. I mean, it’s simple, nothing complicated. So pretty easy for us here. Nothing to worry about.”
While the captain tried to project a relaxed demeanor, the cold reality of the points table suggests anything but simplicity. Complex seven-goal bruiser at the Ekana Stadium left Chennai’s campaign on a knife edge. The five-time champions have slipped to sixth place with 12 points from 12 games and relinquished control of their own destiny.
Can ČSK qualify for the playoffs?
Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh made a mockery of Chennai’s 187-run total and the manner of the defeat severely damaged CSK’s Net Run Rate, which now languishes at a paltry +0.027. To even reach the traditional safety ceiling of 16 points, Chennai need to win both their remaining league matches – a home match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 18, followed by an away match against Gujarat Titans on May 21. Even then, they remain at the mercy of other results and congested mid-table traffic.
However, Gaikwad chose to focus on immediate logistics over looming mathematical permutations. “Well, the first challenge is to get to Chennai. It’s a long flight,” he said.
“Then just make sure we come back and improve the areas we need to improve and yeah, try to adjust and evaluate the conditions as quickly as possible. Just make sure we have a good day. Let that go for whoever has a good day and hopefully we turn things around.”
LOVE THE PRESSURE: HUSSEY
If the captain’s fresh optimism stunned the faithful, assistant coach Michael Hussey provided a more seasoned, if equally defiant, view. The Australian veteran has embraced the pressure of the final week of the league stage and suggested the pressure could act as a catalyst for a side that historically thrives in the knockout crucible.
“There are a lot of teams fighting for the last few spots. I like that,” Hussey said. “This is where the pressure starts to build, not only on us, but on every other team. Crazy things happen here. Even though we have a chance, we still believe we can do it.”
Acknowledging that Chennai now needed outside help to bridge the gap, Hussey remained upbeat about the frantic end to the tournament. “We’ve got to take care of our business. We probably need a couple of results to go our way as well. But that’s the nature of the tournament. I think we’re building to a really nice climax,” he added. “It’s a great opportunity to play well in the next game, to give ourselves a chance by winning the next two games. So we’ll look at it.”
CSK will take on SunRisers Hyderabad in their next game at Chepauk on Monday, while they will hope that the likes of Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals do not push forward with wins under their belts.
