Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday, after his forceful removal from the ‘vote chori’ protest at Akashvani Bhawan and detention, said that he would bear responsibility and not a single “traitor” would be spared.
“To save the traitors of democracy, the remnants of democracy were dragged away.”
“He will be held accountable – not a single traitor will be spared,” Mr Gandhi said in a post in Hindi on X, shortly after he was detained and taken to police lines at Kingsway Camp.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said Mr Gandhi sat peacefully on the dharna and demanded a meeting with the Election Commission (EC), claiming it was his constitutional right to register a peaceful protest.
“Despite this, the forceful detention of the opposition leader by the Amit Shah-controlled Delhi Police raises serious questions about the constitution and democratic rights.”
“The behavior of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister shows considerable nervousness,” Mr Kharge said in a post on X.
“Remember – in a democracy, the ultimate power rests with the people. The people make everyone responsible for every action,” said the Congress president, who joined a protest march against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in the morning.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was also detained by police along with her brother Rahul Gandhi, told reporters as she was led away by security personnel: “The nation has never seen a cowardly government like this… Is this the way? It is our right to protest.”
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh also attended X and said, “The method of eliminating Indians has just become the murder of democracy in India.”
“LOP-Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was dragged away from a peaceful protest that had a simple and direct demand – a meeting with the Election Commission of India.”
“The Delhi Police, which is controlled by a co-conspirator of Murder of Democracy in India, has arrested LOP-LS and others. This is a sign of a regime that knows its exit is imminent,” he said.
Mr. Ramesh later attacked the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for coming out in support of the EC, saying, “The public is asking questions of the Election Commission and the BJP is stepping in as a shield.”
“The BJP, holding five press conferences since morning to defend the Election Commissioner himself, reveals that this is not just a black speck in the lens – rather, the entire lens pot is pitch black,” he noted.
“Why on earth is the ruling party so shaken?” asked the Congress leader.
“This unprecedented defense is rock solid evidence of collusion between the two,” he claimed.
