The government has approved ₹ 12 crore as non-plan grant for Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS), Kalady.
An order issued by the Ministry of Higher Education dated March 2, 2026 stated that sanction was given to release the amount as non-scheduled grant for the financial year 2025-26. The assistance was earmarked for payment of pension, commuting, death and retirement gratuity and severance pay for retired teachers and non-teaching staff. The amount will also be used to pay arrears for the review of wages to employees, arrears for the revision of pensions to pensioners and arrears for the career advancement of teaching staff.
The unplanned grant came as a relief to the university, which was struggling financially. The payment of pension and related benefits to those retiring from 2022 has been affected by the financial crisis, according to authorities.
R. Ajayan, member of the Syndicate and chairman of the Planning and Development Committee, said the university would be able to release the pending benefits to the pensioners. “Earlier, we submitted a memorandum to Finance Minister KN Balagopal about the urgent need for assistance. The finance department issued an order dated February 26 approving the unplanned assistance,” he said.
The Finance Department has instructed the Ministry of Higher Education to initiate the required follow-up measures to release the amount.
