No Trump card: FIFA rejects France’s appeal over star player’s yellow before quarter-hour
Coach Didier Deschamps has confirmed that world football’s governing body has officially rejected an appeal by the French Football Federation (FFF) to overturn Michael Olise’s yellow card. The decision leaves the Bayern Munich winger on the disciplinary rope ahead of France’s crucial quarter-final clash against Morocco at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“As far as Olise’s yellow card is concerned, there has been no change,” Deschamps revealed at Wednesday’s press conference.
“This morning we received a decision from FIFA that the yellow card was upheld.
The warning came in the 97th minute of Les Bleus’ 1-0 Round of 16 victory over Paraguay following a late altercation with midfielder Matas Galarza. Although video footage strongly suggested that Olise merely grabbed the Paraguayan jersey before Galarza went to the ground claiming a blow to the face, FIFA’s disciplinary committee decided not to overturn the referee’s original decision on the pitch.
The FFF’s decision to lodge a formal complaint was framed by a dramatic precedent earlier in the tournament where The United States was successful in canceling the reservation under completely different circumstances.
American forward Folarin Balogun received a straight red card for a challenge in the Americans’ win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, which carried an automatic one-game ban.
However, after unprecedented political lobbying – including three personal phone calls from US President Donald Trump to FIFA president Gianni Infantino – FIFA took the extraordinary step of suspending the ban and allowing Balogun to play in the subsequent round of 16 match against Belgium. The The controversial move drew harsh condemnation from UEFA and the Belgian FA, which accused FIFA of crossing a “red line” regarding the tournament’s competitive integrity.
Officials of the French team claimed that their recall was completely independent and not a direct response to the American intervention. However, the FFF no doubt hoped that FIFA’s sudden willingness to review the disciplinary mandates meant there were genuine administrative grounds for a review, especially given the clear video evidence in Olise’s favour.
Ultimately, the governing body showed no effort to extend the same flexibility to the French delegation.
The sporting implications for Deschamps are significant. Olisa is just one yellow card away from an automatic suspension, which would rule him out of a potential semi-final against Spain or Belgium. He is not alone in this predicament; Teammates Bradley Barcola and Manu Kon also carry cautions from the Paraguay clash and must proceed with caution against Morocco.
