Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that preparations were taking place at a possible meeting with US President Donald Trump next week, potentially in the United Arab Emirates. Putin, however, rejected the idea of expanding the meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zlensky.
Putin made a notice after his meeting with President SEEKH Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Thursday in the Kremlin. When asked who started the Trump meeting, Putin said, “It doesn’t matter. Both parties expressed interest.”
Kremlin: No Agreement on Trilateral Meeting
Unlike earlier Washington reports, which indicate a potential trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the Kremlin stressed that such an agreement does not exist. Putin’s foreign policy advisor, Yuri Ushakov, explained that a priority was a bilateral discussion with Trump.
“First we propose to focus on preparing a bilateral meeting with Trump,” Ushakov said. “We consider the most important to make this meeting successful and productive.”
He added that the proposal of the inclusion of Zelsky, raised by Trump’s special ambassador Steve Witkoff during his visit to the Kremlin, was not discussed.
Putin: Meeting Zelsky is not outside the table but the assumptions remain
While Putin did not rule out the possibility of meeting Zelena in the future, insisting that the current circumstances are not suitable for such interviews.
“Overall, I have nothing to meet with green,” Putin said. “However, for such a meeting, certain conditions should be created and the current situation is far from satisfactory.”
The Russian leader consistently rejected the green offers for direct conversations and said that such a meeting should only occur if the agreement between the two countries is almost completed.
Green responds: Peace requires a Russian truce
Ukrainian President Volodymyr ZlenskyIn posts on social media, she reaffirmed the Kiev commitment to the diplomatic path, but called on Russia to take “real steps” to peace.
“First – the end of killing and it is Russia that must agree to the ceasefire,” Zeletsky wrote on x (formerly Twitter). “Second – a format for leaders so that such a meeting can lead to a truly permanent peace.”
He stressed that Ukraine worked closely with European allies and NATO leaders, including recent calls with German Chancellor Merz, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Finnish President Stubb.
“Ukraine never wanted war and will work tailor -made as possible,” Zelsky added. “The world has a lever effect above the aggressor and means to verify that promises are preserved.”
