The head-to-head tally now reads emphatically 8-1 in India’s favour, but the reality at the R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday was much more favourable. For Pakistan, it was a familiar script written in the ink of tactical ineptitude and fraying nerves. Again there was no match for India; again, Pakistan’s batting proved to be as steady as the shifting threats of boycotting their government.
If they had stuck to their outburst and refused to take the field this February 15, they could have at least spared themselves the public humiliation. Instead, he heads home with zero points and a tarnished reputation.
Pakistan could only manage 114 in 18 overs, falling short by 61 runs – their biggest defeat by India in the history of T20I cricket. With the win, India cruised into the Super 8s with three wins from as many matches, hurting Pakistan’s chances of joining them at the next stage.
Despite a short, spirited spell from their spinners, Pakistan failed to create even a semblance of a contest to stand up to India’s towering giant pigeon.
Apart from an excellent 77 from Ishan Kishan, India didn’t have to do anything extraordinary. They simply executed the basics with clinical precision, which proved more than enough to overwhelm their opponents. On a sticky, spin-friendly surface where other batsmen were visibly struggling to find their timing, Kishan batted like he was on a flat track in Hyderabad during an IPL run-fest. He brought a boldness and fearlessness that effectively blew Pakistan out of the water and ensured the rest of the line-up could operate at the relaxed pace of an intense net.
On the other hand, Pakistan seemed to be boycotting sanity with the bat, making the modest target of 176 look like an insurmountable mountain. While the world has spent weeks highlighting the “threat” of Pakistan’s spin attack, few have noticed the bigger threat: Pakistan’s own batting.
