Glenn Maxwell has dismissed the notion of retiring soon, saying he wants to play more T20Is for Australia. Maxwell has also decided not to end his career and has openly decided to play in the LA Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup.
Maxwell hasn’t had the best of campaigns in this year’s T20 World Cup, with scores of 9, 31 and 22 during the World Cup, while striking at a surprisingly low rate of 110.71 – well below his usual standards. He even recorded the slowest 30-plus knock of his career. That prompted Ricky Ponting said Maxwell will not be part of Australia’s 2028 squad following their early exit from the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Speaking to reporters, Maxwell said he would not be making any calls in the short term.
“I think the decision about my future was probably based more on what comes in the next 12 months,” Maxwell told reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday. “There’s not a lot of T20 cricket planned so there’s probably no need to make any formal announcements and just see how my body is and how I’m traveling and if there are opportunities to play in the future, hopefully I’ll be fit and firing.”
WILL MAXWELL PLAY OLYMPICS, T20 WC 2028?
Asked specifically about the 2028 Olympics and the T20 World Cup, Maxwell said he hoped to play by then. The all-rounder will be 40 by the time both tournaments begin.
“Set up and shoot? Hopefully,” Maxwell said. “But yeah, I’m not setting any dates.
“I felt like I got better and better during the World Cup. I probably judge it more by how I’m running around the pitch and how I feel, probably more than any wickets and runs stats. And I just felt like I was able to go through the games a lot easier. I felt like I played my role as well as I could and I felt like I still had something to offer.”
Maxwell has already retired from ODIs and Australia only play eight T20Is between now and August 2027. Their next engagement will be against Bangladesh in June, but the emphasis will be on the ODI part of the tour.
Maxwell is also preparing for the Pakistan Super League where he will play for the Hyderabad Kingsmen in what will be his first experience of the competition.
