‘No one treats a person like this’: Ravi Shastri on Pakistan’s treatment of jailed Imran Khan

Imran Khan and Ravi Shastri Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has spoken out on the alleged treatment of jailed former Pakistan captain Imran Khan, calling it “inhumane” and saying no person should be treated like that.Reports cited in the story claim that Khan’s health deteriorated in prison, leaving him with only 15% vision in his right eye.

Shastri supports Imran on humanitarian grounds

Speaking to Republic World, Shastri said he was shocked by Khan’s situation and believed cricketers around the world would share his concerns.“I’m not a politician. But just to see the way he’s being treated today is shocking. You know, nobody treats a person like that. On humanitarian grounds, I don’t think he deserves what he’s getting. So I’m not just speaking for myself. I think there will be a lot of cricketers around the world who will be sending the same,” Shastri said.He also wished Khan good health and praised his achievements as a cricketer and captain, especially his ability to guide young players.“I just hope he’s OK and his health is good. Because what he gave to the game was something special. And my memories of him are just as a great leader. You know, just a leader of men. The ability to motivate the youngsters and then push them through. You said he was approaching that at the age of 40, the captain of the team, and he won the World Cup with a pretty young team,” he added.

‘He doesn’t deserve it’

Shastri said Khan, who has been in jail since 2023, is one of Pakistan’s most respected figures worldwide and should be given better treatment.“I hope. I hope he comes out and is treated better. He’s been there for a long time. You can be somewhere else, in the same position, because I don’t understand politics. But sitting there in a cell, he doesn’t deserve that because he’s the most recognized face of Pakistan in the world. Whether you like it or not, that’s my opinion,” Shastri said.He also remembered Khan as a great all-rounder and leader, saying that the India-Pakistan rivalry was built on mutual respect.“This man you see there with me was an incredible cricketer. I mean great cricketer is an understatement. The rivalry was out of respect.”
