The highly anticipated Finalissimo clash between Spain and Argentina has been called off due to rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The match was to be played in Qatar on March 27.
The match would bring together UEFA Euro 2024 champions Spain and Copa America 2024 winners Argentina in Doha. UEFA confirmed the cancellation on Sunday after discussions with local authorities and organizers about the situation in the region.

“Following many discussions between UEFA and the organizing authorities in Qatar, it is announced today that due to the current political situation in the region, the Finalissima cannot be played as expected in Qatar,” UEFA said in a statement.
The European football body added that attempts were made to move the game to another venue, but these efforts ultimately failed.
“UEFA explored other possible alternatives, but each ultimately proved unacceptable to the Argentine Football Association,” the statement added.
The cancellation means fans will miss out on a historic meeting between Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Spanish teenage star Lamino Yamal, who were due to face each other for the first time.
The match generated huge excitement as it would be a symbolic torch-passing moment between the 38-year-old Messi and the 18-year-old Barcelona winger, who has often been compared to the Argentine legend due to their similar playing styles and positions.
WHY WAS FINALISSIMA CANCELED?
The cancellation of the Finalissimo is the latest sports disruption linked to the conflict in the Middle East following the US and Israeli attacks on Iran. Formerly, Formula 1 had to drop Baharu and Saudi Arabia from the Grand Prix for the same reason.
Authorities in Qatar have reportedly concluded that the current political situation in the region makes it impossible to host the event. UEFA, CONMEBOL and tournament organizers explored alternative venues, including Madrid and Buenos Aires, but no agreement could be reached.
The Finalissima was to be the fourth annual intercontinental clash between the champions of Europe and the champions of South America.
Argentina are the current holders of the trophy after defeating Italy 3-0 at Wembley in 2022. The competition itself dates back to the Artemio Franchi Cup which was first played in 1985 when France defeated Uruguay.
Argentina also won the title in 1993 after beating Denmark on penalties.
The canceled match adds to a growing list of global sporting events affected by the ongoing crisis. Formula 1 has already canceled races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia due to the same situation.
With ongoing tensions across the region, the development has also raised concerns about preparations for upcoming international sporting events later this year.
