Kyle Jamieson made an instant statement for Delhi Capitals, delivering the breakthrough they desperately needed and capped it off with a fiery dispatch of Rajasthan Royals teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in Jaipur on Friday 1 May.
Sooryavanshi has quickly developed a reputation for taking elite pace without hesitation, having already shown little fear against some of the best fast bowlers in the tournament. When he found a boundary off the first ball he faced at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, it briefly looked like another fearless outing was in store.
However, Jamieson remained disciplined and struck immediately. Sticking to his lengths and refusing to offer space, the New Zealander followed up with a superb yorker that beat Sooryavanshi to end the teenager’s stay before he could settle. It was a sharp response and exactly the kind of check Delhi needed after a tough run of results.
What followed attracted as much attention as the goal itself. Jamieson, visibly fired up after dismissing the young batsman, turned in celebration and glared at Sooryavanshi as he came back, adding another edge to the early breakthrough.
It was the perfect start for Delhi Capitals, who entered the contest looking for a spark after a string of bruising defeats. Mitchell Starc’s return added more bite to the new-ball attack and the Australian made his presence felt immediately by removing Yashasvi Jaiswal in the opening over.
With Starc batting first and Jamieson quickly following, Delhi’s attack gave them the timely control they had been lacking.
