Raising a question mark over IPL matches to be played in Bengaluru next season, the Karnataka government on Thursday decided to allow major cricket events at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium only after the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) complies with safety guidelines laid down in the John Michael Cunha Commission of Inquiry report into the June 4 stampede outside the stadium.
The decision came at the cabinet, which discussed the issue of allowing large events at the stadium after the KSCA’s appeal.
Recently, the newly elected officials of the association, led by former national cricketer and KSCA president BK Venkatesh Prasad, approached Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
The Chinnaswamy Stadium is home to reigning champions RCB, who won their first trophy in the 2025 edition.
The senior minister said the government has decided to allow sports activities that attract thousands of people only after following safety guidelines and standard operating procedures recommended by the commission.
“It is now up to the association to follow the guidelines. We have not set any deadline. It is up to them,” he said.
The commission, which was set up after 11 fans were killed outside the stadium during RCB’s victory celebrations on June 4, highlighted safety issues related to the design, among other things, of the stadium.
