NMC enables Govt. medical college in Bagalkot to start the admission process

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted permission to Bagalkot Medical College and Research Institute to admit 100 students in first year MBBS from the academic year 2026-27.

The state government had set up the institute in the premises of the government hospital in Bagalkot last year.

The Medical Assessment and Evaluation Board (MARB) of the NMC has issued a Letter of Permission (LoP). This follows the decision of the second appellate committee regarding the establishment of a new medical college at Navanagar, Sector 11, Bagalkot. Earlier, the NMC had rejected the application filed by the college.

An appeal was subsequently filed and the first Appellate Panel issued its order on 23 July 2026. After the subsequent proceedings and decision of the second Appellate Panel, the NMC has now issued an LoP to the college.

Holabasu Shettar, member of the agitation committee of the government medical college, welcomed the decision. “It is a milestone in the field of healthcare and healthcare education infrastructure. The opening of the medical school is expected to create opportunities for students aspiring for medical education while enhancing the availability of trained doctors and healthcare facilities in the region,” he said.

He thanked former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and incumbent Chief Minister DK Shivakumar for setting up the college.

The statement said the permission was granted in accordance with the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act 2019 and the Medical Institutions Establishment, Assessment and Evaluation Regulations 2023. The regulations require applicants seeking to establish new medical colleges to submit a prescribed scheme and mandatory documents to the MARB.
