While many welcomed the move, several raised concerns about passenger safety.
“Some people are getting notices on the road for speeding. I have ordered that no notices be sent for speeds up to 120 kmph. And even above 120, if someone exceeds it by 20%, let them drive. If someone exceeds it, issue a challan,” Nitin Gadkari was quoted as saying by the publication.
Responding to the statement, the user wrote on X: “Does he fully understand maths? 20% of 120 is 24km/h That means people can drive at 144km/h!! Death traps Another reason to stay off Indian highways.”
“Your roads are not rated for 120 km/h on many starches. Don’t risk a motorist’s life (Sic),” added another.
Someone else said, “Indian roads are built to withstand that speed. Carts – Animals – riders on two wheels – pedestrians quickly disappear from the roads.”
In the comments section of the post, another user wrote: “If there is a penalty for slow moving vehicles in the right lane, many accidents can be avoided and even traffic jams can be avoided. Slow moving vehicles in the right lane create traffic jams that slow down the entire road and create dangerous interlocking patterns that increase the risk of accidents.”
Another pointed out: “Risking your life while driving above 100km/h… safety is a big issue on Indian highways… looks good on paper and political statements but don’t you dare risk your lives… pls.”
Another argued: “Infrastructure is not a problem in India. Speed limits are a last resort. First, lane discipline is important. If slow-moving vehicles at 40 km/h occupy every lane and drive parallel, they will not allow other vehicles to move.”
When Nitin Gadkari shared an update
This was stated by the minister at the event. Gadkari was participating in an event organized by industry body CII that focused on the future of India’s highways.
He also called for industry support to implement artificial intelligence-based Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS). The system is said to support enforcement and effectively detect violations.
